Tuesday, 22 September 2015 - Flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has impressed many Kenyans after he recently declared that he was willing to sacrifice half of his salary in order to pay the striking teachers.
Sonko, who made the declaration after President Uhuru Kenyatta disclosed that his government does not have money to implement a 50-60 per cent teacher’s pay rise as ordered by the courts, further revealed that he will file a motion in the Senate that would see Senators and other highly paid civil servants have their salaries cut by half.
The wealthy Senator’s action too sacrifice his pay surprised many Kenyans as it came just days after he had spent a fortune to give his late dad an outstanding send off. Sonko had bought his late dad a gold and diamond crested casket, hired top of the range cars to ferry the body to its final resting place and spent millions to have the whole event covered by national Television.
However it seems Sonko’s pocket are deep enough to allow him to take a 50% pay cut.
“I am ready for a 50% salary cut in order to pay our teachers. I’ll file a motion in Senate for 50% salary cut 4 Senators & other highly paid officers” Sonko twitted.
His followers later took to social media to applaud his actions stating that it was a move in the right direction.
Sample some of the reactions from Kenyans below:
Gladys Getonto Kudos Sonko, you are one leader that Kenya has been missing!!! let the highly Public officers face a salary cut then and only them can we lower the wage bill and pay the lowly paid teachers their due!! We need leaders like you, the problem is how many are willing to do that? very few!!!
Shem Njau If we go for 50% salary cut for all public officers{teachers included} it means then that teachers can now get at least 10% pay which the govt can afford.
