Biashara Ni Biashara: How a fake athlete tried to con Shs 75,000 from a Nairobi marathon

Sunday, 25 October 2015 - A man was on Sunday arrested at the Nyayo National Stadium as he tried to con organizers of the annual Standard Chartered marathon off Kshs 750, 000.

Julius Njogu was arrested just minutes after he finished second in the 42 Kilometre men’s race after organizers noticed that he was too fresh and without a single sweat.

It later emerged that the he had cheated the marathon course as while other athletes were busy competing on the road, he was hiding in a dustbin close to the finish line where he jumped out and joined the race to take a podium finish.

Njogu, who could have easily walked home with Kshs 750,000 had his trick gone unnoticed, however insisted that he covered the entire course claiming that the organizers made a mistake when they changed the course mid way through the marathon.

He will be arraigned in court on Monday.
