Friday, October 16, 2015 – Controversial Kenyan gospel singer, Ringtone, might become a guest of the state very soon after Music Copyright Society of Kenya CEO, Maurice Okoth sued him.
According to Okoth, the “Mziki ni Dawa” hit-maker spread false, destructive and defamatory rumors about him and the MCKS.
“Over the past few months, you have made several false and extremely derogatory statements concerning our client, which statements have been posted by yourself on various public channels including mobile phone chat groups, the full particulars whereof are well within your knowledge; that you allegedly have a purported dossier with assumed malpractices by our client in his line of business; that you are threatening to publicise. We have had the opportunity to see this supposed dossier of yours and indeed the contents therein are extremely defamatory and contain complete falsehoods that cannot be justified. Under the Kenya Law, it is unlawful to engage in defamation of another’s character and reputation....” Read part of a demand letter which he sent to Ringtone.
On the other hand, Ringtone claimed that he has not received any letter addressed to him by the MCSK CEO.
“I have not been served yet, but I have heard about it. However, I don’t understand what he means by defamation since I’m part of MCSK and I’m allowed to talk about the organisation as a member. He claims that I defamed him on WhatsApp but is he the only person called Maurice,” Said the gospel singer during a recent media interview.
This comes barely a few days after an audio clip of Ringtone saying that he will ruin MCSK surfaced online. However, according to Ringtone who quickly rubbished the romours, the audio clip was doctored.
“Do not believe everything you hear. I am not aware of these things and that is not my voice. I am being framed,” he said.
