Friday, January 21, 2022 – The International Criminal Court (ICC) case facing lawyer Paul Gicheru has taken a new twist after fresh details emerged on how Deputy President William Ruto used millions to bribe witnesses in his case.
In a document signed by ICC Deputy Prosecutor James Stewart, the prosecution claimed the lawyer met witnesses in the Ruto case, including the late Meshak Yebei, who was killed mysteriously in 2015.
In the document, Gicheru also admitted to having met Yebei who was among ICC prime witnesses in DP Ruto’s case.
Similarly, Stewart claimed that the lawyer, who had an office in Eldoret, studied with DP Ruto at Kapsabet High School, indicating that they knew each other well.
The prosecution now claims that there is evidence to prove that Deputy President William Ruto spent millions of money to fund plans to corrupt witnesses in his case.
Preliminary investigations by The Hague-based court also show that the witnesses were given kickbacks to withdraw and therefore DP Ruto‘s case collapsed.
Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta were among six Kenyans indicted by the ICC in connection with the 2007-08 post-election bloodshed that saw over 1000 Kenyans killed and over half a million displaced.
Ruto and Uhuru’s cases were dropped for lack of evidence.
