Thursday, March 17, 2022 – Deputy President William Ruto took a dig at President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, accusing it of excessive borrowing that needs to be investigated.
Speaking on Tuesday during his crowning as the UDA presidential candidate, Ruto blamed the handshake for aiding in the blundering of the economy through massive borrowing.
“The only thing I can remember on matters to do with an economy that the handshake has done is to borrow 7 trillion in the 5 years, it is a tragedy that we must investigate,” Ruto said.
“Our competitors are telling us it is okay to have debt. But we must not be slaves of debt. Debt must be the last resort,” the DP added.
The second in command further accused President Uhuru of what he termed ‘state capture’, saying there is a need to free independent institutions from monopoly by a few individuals.
“Our competitors are the agents of monopolies. They are the masters of conflict of interest. They are the agents of state capture and we must free this country.”
“They believe that this nation should be about a few people who wield the levers of state power. This country is not just about leaders. This country has about 50 million Kenyans.” Ruto said.
If elected the president, Ruto promised to introduce integrity at the Kenya Revenue Authority, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, saying the institutions are currently only serving political interests.
