Tuesday, October 24, 2023 – Cattle rustlers have attacked a General Service Unit (GSU) camp in Kapindasum, Baringo County.
Police in Baringo and local administration officers, including Arabal location chief William Koech, confirmed that the incident started at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, with the shootout going on for over two hours.
Preliminary reports further indicated that the cattle rustlers also surrounded the neighbouring Kapindasum Primary School.
However, it was unclear whether they had taken any occupant hostage.
Teachers and students at the school are currently held in their classrooms as they wait for the police to contain the situation.
GSU officers were also said to have been cornered after the bandits sealed escape routes.
The motive behind the attack is also yet to be known as the cattle rustlers have not issued any demands as of now.
However, the attack may be perceived as a retaliatory attack to the ongoing joint Kenya Defence Forces and Police operation to flash out armed militia in the region.
Bandits may have also targeted the camp to steal weapons including firearms and ammunition.
“At around 10 am, bandits attacked the GSU camp in Kapindasum. There are reports that the incident may have also involved a school. When I talked to the teacher, I was told they were afraid.”
“They are reported to have surrounded the school and the gunshots can be heard,” a reporter stated.
The incident comes amidst the ongoing security operation in the North Rift that is targeting bandits that have been the cause of insecurity in the region over the years.
