Wednesday, February 21, 2024 - Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has visited his former college in Germany to collect his certificate.
Due to his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's ties in the early years of communism, Raila got to study in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Raila received a scholarship in 1965 at the Technical School, Magdeburg (now a part of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg) in the then German Democratic Republic (GDR.)
At Von Guericke, Raila graduated with a certificate in Metal Processing (Welding) from the institution and obtained an aggregate grade of “Good”.
Since he is now vying for the African Union Chairperson post, Raila went to the institution where he collected his certificate to apply for the continent's top post.
Raila said the nostalgic visit brought back memories of his time there, thanking the local community for their enduring spirit.
"Visiting the Herder Institute, my alma mater in Leipzig, Germany, brought back fond memories of my high school days.
"From the familiar corridors to returning to my previous house on Lumumba Street and meeting with today's students.
"Grateful for the journey and the enduring community at Herder," he wrote on X on Tuesday.
