Friday, June 21, 2024 - Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has pledged to give Sh1 million to the policeman who was injured while handling a teargas canister during the 'occupy parliament' protests in Nairobi on Tuesday.
In a statement, Mutua said he will contribute the money together with Narok Governor Ole Ntuntu to help Chief Inspector David Karuri Maina
The Tourism CS noted that Maina’s life has changed and he needs to be cushioned during his recovery.
"My friend, Governor Ole Ntuntu, and I are contributing one million to help the young man whose life has been ruined, so it can at least cushion him. I hope others will contribute a little to change his life,” said Mutua.
At the same time, CS Mutua cautioned Kenyans against being involved in protests that end up in violence, saying the blood of the maimed officer was on their hands.
“My beautiful young people who are being driven by propaganda, look at the facts, don’t get involved in activism and violence that leads to bloodshed. That officer who lost his hands, his blood is on you,” he added.
Maina was injured after he opened a teargas canister and delayed releasing it.
The teargas detonated and severely injured his two arms. Another officer who was near the Maina sustained minor injuries on her chest.
The two officers were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital for medical attention.
