Tuesday, August 27, 2024 - Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI). The 54-year-old, who is also a former Major League Baseball pitcher, entered his plea in Smith County, Texas, on Tuesday morning, just before his case was set to go to trial.
Court records indicate that Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to
the charge of DWI third or more, a serious offence that could result in up to
10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000. The details of the plea
agreement he reached with prosecutors have not been disclosed. When contacted,
Smith County prosecutors declined to comment, and Mahomes Sr.'s attorney has
not responded to requests for further information.
Mahomes Sr. is scheduled to be sentenced on September 23.
While he faces significant potential penalties, it is anticipated that the plea
deal may lead to a more lenient sentence.
The legal troubles for Mahomes Sr. began in February when he
was arrested following a traffic stop in which officers reported he showed
signs of intoxication. According to court documents, Mahomes Sr. admitted to
having consumed alcohol before driving and was found with an open 16-ounce can
of Coors beer in his vehicle.
This arrest came just days before his son, Patrick Mahomes,
led the Kansas City Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory in Las Vegas.
Despite attending the game, Mahomes Sr. maintained a low profile during the
celebrations.
This is not Mahomes Sr.'s first encounter with DWI charges.
In 2019, he was charged with DWI second or more and was sentenced to 40 days in
jail, which he served on weekends.
As the sentencing date approaches, Mahomes Sr. and his legal
team will await the court’s decision on the final outcome of this latest DWI
case.
