Sunday, September 8, 2024 - Alex Morgan, a U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) legend, has announced her retirement from professional soccer, with her final game set for this weekend. The 35-year-old forward shared the news in an emotional post on social media, revealing her decision comes as she prepares to welcome her second child.
"I gave everything to this sport, and what I got in
return was more than I could ever dream of," Morgan wrote on Instagram.
"Success for me is defined by never giving up and giving your all, and I
did just that. I'm giving my all every single day on the field, and I did
that."
Morgan’s last match will be when the San Diego Wave, her
current team, faces off against the North Carolina Courage on Sunday, September
8. Throughout her post, Morgan expressed gratitude not just for her career on
the field, but for her off-field endeavors, which included advocating for the
growth of women's sports, pursuing business ventures, and embracing her role as
a mother.
Her daughter, Charlie, will soon be a big sister as Morgan
and her husband, Servando Carrasco, are expecting their second child. "And
as unexpected as this came, we are so overjoyed," Morgan added. "To
me, family means everything, I wouldn't be here without my husband and my
family, uplifting and motivating and encouraging and supporting me and
sacrificing for me, for the last 15 years as a professional athlete."
Morgan has been a pivotal figure in the USWNT from 2010 to
2024, helping lead the team to two World Cup victories and an Olympic gold
medal in 2012. She has also enjoyed success in the National Women's Soccer
League (NWSL), playing for the Orlando Pride and the San Diego Wave, as well as
stints with European clubs.
Although Morgan was not included in the USWNT squad for the
2024 Paris Games, she’s eager to make her final appearance on the pitch.
"I just want to thank the fans for always supporting
us, using what we’re saying, and making it magnified," Morgan said.
"Being there, showing up day in and day out. Supporting not only the teams
that I’ve played on, but the player and the human that I am as well."
Morgan leaves behind a remarkable legacy both on and off the
field.
