Wednesday, March 1, 2023 – Lawyer Danstan Omari has confirmed that indeed his client, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, is out of the country.
This follows yesterday’s revelations by the Immigration Department which indicated that Matiang’i quietly jetted out of the country on the night of February 19, just after he was summoned for grilling by the DCI over the alleged raid on his home.
The revelation saw President William Ruto’s allies allege that Matiang’i has gone into exile to avoid being persecuted by President William Ruto over his past mistakes.
However, speaking during an interview, Matiang’i’s lawyer refuted reports that he fled over his DCI summons.
According to Omari, Matiang’i travelled to the United Kingdom to handle family matters.
“There is nothing sinister about his travel. He is there to attend to an urgent private family matter and shall return to resume his ordinary routine as a private citizen,” he stated in a subsequent statement.
He added that Kenyans needed to stop speculating over the travel given that the former CS would return to the country in due course.
“Those familiar with his travel schedules over time will confirm that he travels regularly to that part of the world via KLM.”
“It is therefore unfair to cast aspersions on his movement,” he stated.
According to the lawyer, Matiang’i was scheduled to be in the UK for two weeks.
